Pass the Flask You Hag: Losing My Virginity at Bowery Poetry

This weekend, George Wallace made my month by allowing my up onstage for Beat Hour @ The Bowery [Poetry Club]. The bill also featured PHIL ASAPH, TED JONATHON and ROBERT GIBBONS and an impromptu finale by Russ Green. I am honored and thankful to have been allowed onstage with them.

It was my first public reading and I was absolutely fucking terrified.

Fortunately, someone got all my public onstage awkwardness on film.

I ramble about about old drunken aunties, divine relationship-enders on the Bayou, the importance of underscoring during blizzards...and about Mick Jagger's shirts. Because let's face it, they're the highlight of any closet.

Be gentle. It was literally my first time.

  2. Having personally seen (but not up close) Mick Jagger in one of his shirts, I can attest that they do, indeed "come into being and pass out of consciousness, manipulating the void." I was lucky to keep conscious through the whole ordeal. I was magnificent. A magic carpet ride.
You held your own well on the stage with that mic. Nice job!

  3. Nice! I need to listen to more readings... I didn't realize how intriguing they were.

  4. You are trembling, honestly, your performance is perfect. Your first time is the dying thought of us, the millions of lesser beings crammed in a great sack, wanting at the laundromat for your maid-servant to remember that she left the oven on. Sorry, my enthusiasm got the best of me. Great work!

  6. as a fellow poet looking to get blogging and looking to read, just writing to tell you I loved hearing your reading, while sitting here awash in my own intensities of life, god forsaken experiences heaping themselves upon me without any input from me whatsoever; you were/are a nice reprieve, a great bit of inspiration. Rock ooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwnnnnnn as they said at one time, or at least, as one artist said to my then-young artist son needing inspration and validation. YOu know, maybe i'm not signed up or whatever, so maybe you will never see my comments, but I say, I thought you made me stand up proud, think of all the poetic thoughts I've wanted to share; evaluate what the fuck I'm doing in my life these days, and in general, made me think, yah, the world needs you and the world needs me too. Carry on happily. Ya blest me. sanks, sanks a wottt.Natalie Kim

  7. @Jeffrey, My0wn5avior: Thank you, thank you, and thank you. My trembling lasted for 20 minutes after the reading. I do not know how to keep the hands from shaking.

@Joe: Please read somewhere so we can watch, and call ROCK OWWWWWWWWWWWWN. Share. Evaluate. Pontificate. Placate. Share. And thank you.
